Protecting Dartmoor
Our sustainability aims
We have made a serious commitment to our environmental responsibilities and to be as sustainable as possible, continuing on a journey to improve our eco-friendly guest experience and reduce our carbon footprint.
What we do:
- We have 10 solar panels fitted to south-east facing roof for electricity generation.
- Battery storage of excess solar generation.
- Smart electric meter installed with regular monitoring
- Power saving light bulbs fitted and motion sensor lighting where suitable.
- Thermostatic controls fitted to all radiators.
- Upcycled the majority of furniture in the guest rooms, and passed on items no longer used to reduce landfill waste.
- Sort and recycle all waste with minimal amount going to landfill.
- Boiler maintenance every three years.
- Water efficient washing machine (30 minute cycle).
- Water butt outside to help look after the garden.
- Monitoring of water and energy use.
- Use of showers rather than baths in each of the guest rooms.
- Green information available to guests
- Totally non-smoking and non-vaping establishment.
- Green laundry practices, including line drying (inside when necessary with our weather).
- Avoid single use plastic as much as possible – toiletries are refillable and sourced responsibly. At breakfast, butter, preserves and sauces are not served packaged.
- Roof insulation.
- Natural products used for cleaning (chlorine free)
- Locally sourced produce; eggs from local villages, meats from the local butcher, fruit and veg from the green grocer – even our coffee is roasted less than five miles away.
- Removed Soya products from our menu and replaced them with oat products as more sustainable.
- All administration is done electronically to save paper.
- Information on sustainable transport is provided and we have installed a police grade secure bicycle storage facility.
- Lights outside are on a sensor to switch off after 60 seconds or are solar powered.
We want to in the near future:
- Develop our solar energy system to include hot water generation.
- Install further smart heating controls throughout the property.
- Install (and promote the use of) EV charge points by 2026.
- Replace any cleaning products and toiletries to ensure everything is chlorine, paraben and phosphate free by summer 2024
- Replace electrical items with minimum of ‘B’ rated as suitable.
- Install reduced water consumption alternatives for toilets, taps and shower heads, improving water usage efficiency.
- Replace double glazing in guest rooms to increase energy conservation.
We kindly ask guests to:
- Reuse towels whenever possible.
- Heat the room to a comfortable level using the thermostatic radiator valve rather than opening the window.
- Turn off lights when leaving a room.
- Segregate your waste. Please leave recyclable materials such as cardboard, paper, plastic, glass bottles and cans next to the bin. We will dispose of any food waste in our compost.
- Turn the tap off whilst brushing your teeth and only fill the kettle with as much water as you need to boil.
